We are going to try an experiment for Advent. But before I tell you all about that, I have to say...
Did you know Jesus is coming? He is! He’s coming real soon. You know this because there’s a day called Black Friday, which the Friday of doom, where we celebrate his coming by doing just what he commanded us to do, getting really good deals on things.
But Jesus is really coming at the end of days. And Jesus has already come, and in many ways, Jesus is already here, gathering the church to himself. Christ appears to us every day in myriad ways. And if we give up our disgraceful grasping and panting after goods, we will be able to see him more clearly.
That brings me to our Advent experiment. This year we are going to do an Advent Instagram calendar. Every day we will post a word or phrase from Sunday’s texts to our Facebook page, and all of us will try to take pictures of that theme and Instagram them #osachurch, or post them directly to our church Facebook page. That way, every day during Advent, we will spend some time deliberately looking away from the treasure that does not last, and to the treasure that lasts forever, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
This Sunday will be the first day, and the first word will be ‘Heavens’. I’m really looking forward to what comes, and to see how all of us are receiving Jesus as we move through the world.
