Uffda! It’s hot.
It’s so hot, you might not want to even think of doing anything outside of the air conditioner. There’s a guy on my block that walks dogs. He is putting ice cubes in a towel and putting the towel around his neck so that they ice will melt and keep him cool. I want an ice suit!
It’s so hot you might think that doing nothing sounds perfect. But, I’m going to try to challenge that.
Our BBQ Book Club is starting very soon—July 19th at 6:30 p.m.! For our first meeting we’re reading A Wrinkle in Time, the children’s book by Madeline L’Engle. This is an even kid-friendlier than normal book club. I’ll try to have some questions for the kids to consider, if they’ve read the book.
After that, we’ll be reading five essays by James Baldwin in the following order:
1. Equal in Paris
2. Fifth Avenue, Uptown: A Letter from the South AND East River, Downtown: A
Postscript to a Letter from Harlem
3. A Fly in the Buttermilk
4. A Stranger in the Village
5. The Fire Next Time
These are great—the kids run around and chase fireflies, while we talk and chase truth and meaning. Who will succeed?
Also, please let me know if you want to see NYCFC take on the Vancouver Whitecaps on August 4th! We need to purchase the tickets by next week.
Yours,
Pastor John
