This Sunday we get two special things: first, a guest preacher, Zach Presutti. He is a Jesuit who works with Centro Alto Gracia, and his ministry focusses on helping the incarcerated and those who are making the transition from prison to civilian life. Through him I learned about Edgecombe Correctional Facility, our own neighborhood’s prison. After church he will talk to us a little bit about his ministry and how our church might be able to help.
Our Scripture passages are also pretty great. There are two people that get called back from the dead—one by Jesus and one by Elijah. And then, of course, there’s Paul, who talks about persecuting the church and then becoming a messenger for the church—another kind of death and resurrection.
And that, after all, is what our faith is about. Our faith is about how we are not bound to our history—we do not have to be the person that we always were, we don’t have to continue to do what we have always done. In fact, when God’s Word speaks to us, amazing things can happen: the dead can live, captives can go free, lives can be made and remade. God’s Spirit enlivens everything, and makes us free. That’s what we believe, and that’s what we celebrate this Sunday.
